So, which season is best for an Akaroa dolphin cruise?
The simple answer? Whenever you're in Akaroa.
Hector's dolphins aren't seasonal visitors ~ they are residents of Akaroa Harbour and can be seen throughout the year. Each season simply offers a different experience.
- Summer is ideal if you love warmer weather and long days, and the possibility of dolphin calf sightings.
- Autumn brings a quieter atmosphere and beautiful changing light.
- Winter offers crisp scenery and the possibility of encountering migrating humpback whales outside the harbour.
- Spring brings longer days, fresh colour and renewed activity around the harbour.
There is no particular time of day or season that guarantees dolphin sightings. Hector's dolphins are wild animals, so we can never guarantee an encounter, but Akaroa Harbour is a hotspot for the species and we have a high success rate with sightings throughout the year.
How many cruises do Akaroa Dolphins operate?
We operate year-round, weather permitting, with seasonal departure schedules.
Our 12:45 pm cruise operates all year round, while our 10:15 am and 3:15 pm departures are available depending on the booking calendar and seasonal availability. For groups of 10 or more, additional departures can also be arranged by prior agreement.
Because departure times can change with the season and demand, we recommend checking our booking calendar for the most up-to-date schedule before planning your day.
What should you bring whatever the season?
New Zealand weather has a reputation for a reason: you can sometimes experience four seasons in one day.
Our best advice is to dress in layers and be prepared for changing conditions.
We recommend bringing:
- A warm jacket ~ even in summer, the breeze on the water can be cool.
- Sun protection ~ hat, sunscreen and sunglasses are useful year-round.
- Comfortable clothing ~ layers allow you to adjust as conditions change.
- A camera ~ because you never know what you might encounter.
And if you forget a jacket or sunscreen, we have spare jackets and sunscreen available on board.
If the sea conditions are likely to cause motion sickness, we also recommend speaking with a pharmacist before your cruise about suitable seasickness remedies.
A nature cruise is different every time
One of the wonderful things about cruising Akaroa Harbour is that you never quite know what nature has in store.
Hector's dolphins are our resident stars, and we have a high success rate seeing them throughout the year. We may also encounter New Zealand fur seals, white-flippered penguins and a variety of seabirds.
And occasionally, something truly unexpected appears ~ from orcas and other dolphin species to migrating humpback whales.
That's why we call it a nature cruise, rather than simply a dolphin tour.
The scenery changes. The weather changes. The wildlife changes.
And every cruise has its own story.
Whenever you choose to visit Akaroa, we'll be delighted to share our harbour with you.
