Our Climate Action Plan

At Akaroa Dolphins, we recognise the important role tourism businesses play in protecting the environment for future generations. Operating within the unique marine environment of Akaroa Harbour, we are committed to supporting the global ambition of limiting global warming to 1.5°C and reducing the environmental impact of our operations.

Our Commitment

Akaroa Dolphins is committed to continual improvement in reducing emissions, improving operational efficiency, and supporting conservation initiatives that protect the wildlife and ecosystems we rely on.

Current Actions

We have already taken important steps to reduce our environmental footprint, including:

  • Transitioning two out of our three company vehicles to electric vehicles.
  • Operating vessels fitted with highly fuel-efficient engines to minimise fuel consumption and emissions.
  • Continuing to review new technologies and operational practices that improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
  • Supporting local conservation and marine protection initiatives within Akaroa Harbour.

SMART Climate Targets

To support our climate commitments, we aim to:

  • Maintain a fleet where at least 66% of company vehicles remain electric or low-emission by 2035.
  • Continue reducing fuel consumption per passenger carried through efficient vessel operations and route management.
  • Investigate future low-emission marine technologies and alternative propulsion systems as they become commercially viable.
  • Measure and review operational emissions annually to identify further reduction opportunities.

Resources and Implementation

Our leadership team is responsible for overseeing the implementation of this climate action plan. Investment in low-emission vehicles, efficient marine technology, staff training, and sustainable operational practices forms part of our ongoing business planning and budgeting.

Stakeholder Engagement

We work alongside staff, suppliers, visitors, conservation organisations, and the wider Akaroa community to encourage environmentally responsible tourism. We also aim to educate visitors about marine conservation and the importance of protecting Hector’s dolphins and the harbour environment.

Governance and Review

This climate action plan has been approved by Akaroa Dolphins’ management and leadership team and will be reviewed and updated at least every 36 months to ensure it remains relevant, measurable, and aligned with evolving best practice and climate science.
