Akaroa Harbour Dolphin Nature Cruises: How We Compare to Other Operators

Choosing a dolphin cruise in Akaroa can feel confusing ~ especially when several operators run in the same harbour. While we all share a love for this special place, there are important differences that can shape your experience.

To help with your questions:

  • What is the best dolphin tour in Akaroa?
  • Which Akaroa dolphin tour is best?
  • What is the best way to see dolphins in Akaroa?
  • Which Akaroa dolphin cruise should I book?
  • What is the best dolphin experience in Akaroa?
  • What is the difference between Akaroa dolphin tours?
  • What is the best small-group dolphin tour in Akaroa?
  • What is the most authentic dolphin tour in Akaroa?

Here’s how we compare, and why many guests choose to cruise with us.

• The most stable, purpose-designed dolphin-watching boat in Akaroa

In 2019, our New Zealand-made modern catamaran, "Akaroa Dolphin II", was custom-built specifically with our guests in mind ~ designed for dolphin watching and the unique conditions of Akaroa Harbour. Its purpose-built design offers exceptional comfort and stability, with less rolling and a smoother, more relaxed experience than larger, less specialised vessels.

We are the only wildlife cruise company in Akaroa able to leave the harbour and explore the beauty of the outer bays, giving us a greater chance of finding dolphins and other wildlife throughout the year. Our ability to travel further means we can reach areas where dolphins are more likely to be found, whatever the season.

The boat is a spacious, stable catamaran, so it’s particularly good if you want comfortable viewing and are prone to seasickness.

• We do not swim with dolphins ~ for conservation reasons

We prioritise the well-being of the endangered Hector’s dolphin. Our tours focus on responsible, respectful viewing rather than intrusive interactions. While some operators offer swimming, we’ve chosen a different path ~ one that puts the long-term protection of Hector’s dolphins first. Our guests consistently tell us that observing dolphins behaving naturally, without disturbance, is just as magical ~ and often more meaningful.

• We supported and helped establish the Akaroa Marine Reserve

Our team was closely involved in the creation of the reserve, and to this day, we remain active members of the Akaroa Harbour Marine Protection Society.

• A focus on the little touches

At Akaroa Dolphins, we believe it’s the little touches that make an experience truly memorable ~ from our warm welcome, home baking and complimentary drinks to cosy jackets and our famous dolphin-spotting dogs. Combined with small groups and genuinely personal service, we make sure every guest feels looked after from the moment they step aboard.

We aim to make our guests feel truly cared for by offering:

  • Thoughtful, friendly hosting
  • Warm jackets
  • Filtered water
  • Complimentary drinks
  • Homemade baking
  • Sunscreen
  • Dolphin dogs
  • Ability to sit and chat in the flybridge with the skipper

Our experienced crew and knowledgeable guides provide in-depth commentary throughout the cruise, bringing Akaroa’s fascinating history and diverse wildlife to life. Learn about the harbour, its unique environment and the wildlife you encounter along the way, while enjoying an unforgettable cruise through Akaroa Harbour.

• Smaller groups for a more personal experience on our large 50ft catamaran

Our tours feel more like visiting a friend’s home than riding on a crowded bus. We keep our tours intimate, welcoming just 35-45 guests rather than filling the boat with up to 100 passengers like some operators.

With 67 seats on board, there’s always plenty of room to sit back, move around and enjoy the views without feeling crowded. Choose from comfortable indoor or outdoor seating, or head upstairs to our flybridge and join the skipper in our VIP section, which is open for everyone to enjoy, giving you an even more special perspective of the harbour.

It’s a relaxed, spacious way to experience Akaroa Harbour, with plenty of room to take in the scenery, wildlife and stories along the way.

Appealing if you want a less crowded experience.

• B Corp Certified

Not only are we Gold Qualmark, Department of Conservation Approved, MOSS Approved for Marine Safety and a SMART Operator ~ which is common practice within the New Zealand tourism and maritime industry ~ we are also proud to be B Corp Certified, reflecting our commitment to environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and strong community values internationally.

• A Locally Owned and Operated Family Business

Akaroa Dolphins is a proudly locally owned and operated family business, with a deep connection to Akaroa Harbour spanning more than 200 years.

Our family was involved in the very first Akaroa Harbour Nature Cruises in the 1970s and 1980s aboard Miss Akaroa, and our family were also among the first European settlers in Akaroa in 1838.

Today, that connection continues across eight generations. We are incredibly proud to share our home, our knowledge and our passion for this special harbour with visitors from around the world.

We are not part of a large corporation or international tourism group. Akaroa Dolphins is a genuinely independent, family-owned business, and that makes a difference to the experience we offer.

For us, this isn't simply a tourism business ~ this is our home. We care deeply about Akaroa Harbour, its wildlife, its community and its future. Every cruise is an opportunity to share a place we love with others, while helping protect and celebrate the incredible environment that makes Akaroa so special.
