On Monday April the 10th my wife, 2 of our grand children and I had a very enjoyable trip to see the Hector’s dolphins.
Actually we were on a mission to see one specific dolphin. My wife and I had given grand daughter Eva a WWF sponsorship of a dolphin for her birthday and Eva had named that dolphin ‘Dot’. We were looking for her.
The weather was beautiful but chilly as we left the heads and there was very little activity. I was beginning to think that Dot might not appear but suddenly there she was.
Our friendly skipper and crew advised that she was a female and that it was unusual for her to be on her own. She played in the bow wake for quite sometime and made several passes before she leapt clear of the water. We are sure that jump was just for Eva and we were now more sure than ever that it was Dot.
We then encountered more dolphins, this time in pods. We saw seals, interesting bird life and the volcanic nature of the harbour up close. A very informative day.
We would like to thank the skipper and crew for the way they made a special fuss of Eva and the story of Dot and her sponsorship.
The whole team was very friendly and knowledgeable and we would recommend their dolphin encounter to everybody.
