We at Akaroa Dolphins love our Marine Mammals. Julia & Katy were lucky enough to attend a Project Jonah Marine Mammal Medic course in Sumner at the end of November. What a dedicated and committed organisation they are, in protecting NZ marine mammals. What makes their charity so important is their educational courses, providing the skills and knowledge needed to assist in the rescue of stranded marine mammals.
NZ has one of the highest marine mammal strandings in the world. We also see half of the world’s 88 cetacean (dolphins & whales) species living or passing through our waters, which is pretty amazing for our little country in the mighty Pacific Ocean.
As a voluntary organisation, these guys do incredible work for marine conservation. Following this course, Julia & Katy have been added to the national database of medics for future stranding call-outs.
