Akaroa Dolphins has a strong focus on conservation, working closely with the DOC (Department of Conservation), the New Zealand Whale and Dolphin Trust, the Akaroa Marine Protection Society and the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust.
Owners Hugh and Pip, realised the need for greater protection of the marine environment and to ensure the future health of the harbour. They are part of the Akaroa Marine Protection Society, which fought for 17 years to establish the Akaroa Marine Reserve, finally established in 2014.
As a DOC permitted operator, Akaroa Dolphins is part of the ‘SMART’ (Sustainable Marine Mammal Actions in Recreation & Tourism) operator programme which aims to promote responsible behaviour dolphins, whales & seals by boat operators. This is a partnership between DOC & boat operators for the protection of marine mammals, Marine Mammal Protection Regulations 1992.
